Overview

SUMMARY

The primary purpose of this position is responsible to assist the Store Service Supervisor in one or more territories with managing an internal technical staff consisting of five to seven Refrigeration Service Technicians.  In addition, the position requires the Associate to maintain five to eight assigned stores at the discretion of management.  Position requires travel from site-to-site to service and repair refrigeration, HVAC, and other miscellaneous equipment in retail supermarkets. Most work is performed without direct supervision or assistance.  Assists in the oversight and coordination of maintenance projects with internal technicians and external vendors.

This position is designed to transition an existing Refrigeration Service Technician into a Store Service Supervisor position in two to four years.  The incumbent is also required to perform all tasks in a safe manner consistent with company policies and state and federal laws. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The associate is responsible for the functions below, in addition to other duties as assigned:

  1. Develop, plan and communicate repair and manpower activities to accomplish repairs, preventative maintenance and audits requiring multiple technicians.
  2. Supervise the start-up and operation of new equipment, ensure that new and existing equipment is operated correctly for optimum performance and energy efficiency.
  3. Communicate with the Service Supervisor to advise on the need for further action when appropriate.
  4. Ongoing coaching, mentoring and training technicians throughout the Weis Store Network.
  5. Respond to service requests to repair supermarket refrigeration systems, HVAC, cardboard balers, checkout counters, lighting, humidifiers and other miscellaneous equipment.
  6. Maintain contact with Store Support Center dispatch via telephone and voice mail to receive new service calls.
  7. Utilize company email system to send and receive messages.
  8. Perform periodic preventive maintenance inspections and procedures; maintain the workplace (including the service van) in a neat and clean safe condition.
  9. Respond to emergency breakdown calls as first level resolution whenever possible before escalating to next level of management.
  10. Interview store personnel to determine the need for service, instruct store personnel in proper operational techniques for safe, effective and efficient operation of their equipment.
  11. Coordinate repairs and timelines with vendors.
  12. Complete service reports, time sheets, and expense reports and purchase records to document activities.
  13. Train new Service Technicians through the ability to self-perform store services until fully qualified to assume territory responsibilities. Monthly reviews of performance is required to ensure the new associate is performing based on company standards in a safe and efficient manner.
  14. Provides supervision coverage in the absence of the Store Supervisor. 
  15. Work and operate vehicles and/or equipment within accordance of OSHA-defined standards and laws or codes of municipals having jurisdiction. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

This associate does not have any supervisory responsibilities in this role.  However, will direct the activities of at least three (3) technicians with supervisor oversight and trainees when applicable.

  • Talk and hear; verbally express ideas and impart information or instructions.
  • Use hands to finger, handle, and/or feel; the ability to type, pick, pinch with fingers, seize, hold, grasp or turn with hands, and perceive attributes of objects and materials, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with fingertips.
  • Frequently required to do the following activities:
  • Walk about.
  • Ability to work under extremes of weather, and under conditions of heat, cold, noise, and dust to the extent they are found in the typical supermarket.
  • Ability to work under pressure of time, without direct supervision, and outside of normal working hours (for occasional emergencies).
  • Stand dynamically for long periods without a break.
  • Climb stairs and/or ladders.
  • Maintain balance while walking, standing, crouching, or running.
  • Twist upper torso.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
  • Reach up and out with hands and arms.
  • Lift up to hundred (100) pounds and carry a distance of twenty (20) feet.
  • Push and/or pull up to hundred (100) pounds a distance of ten (10) feet.

Job Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of five (5) years of proven commercial refrigeration/HVAC systems experience and satisfactory overall performance. 

Knowledge of MSDS and OSHA; EPA certified (Type I and II) in proper refrigeration practices is required.  Post-secondary technician training in job-related disciple is highly desired.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
