Job Description:

The primary purpose of this position is to provide day to day support for distributed servers running operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Linux,  as well as virtualization platforms in a multi-site environment.  Installs, configures and manages both hardware and operating system software components to support computer processing for the enterprise.  Also, maintains and updates operating system images for servers.  May also participate in administering storage systems such as SAN and NAS, and perform support functions such as backup and recovery.  Frequent independent judgments are essential and within well-defined procedures to solve moderately complex issues and/or perform tasks with a limited number of variables. The incumbent is also required to perform all tasks in a safe manner consistent with corporate policies and applicable laws.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The associate is responsible for the functions below, in addition to other duties as assigned:

  • Maintain operation and maintenance of local and remote distributed system environments. Track available operating system and/or system management software updates and periodically deploy patches/updates during approved maintenance windows.
  • Maintain and deploy system images for local and remote distributed system environments utilizing industry standard tools.
  • Provision and configure new servers for deployment.
  • Work with hardware maintenance teams on image deployments including testing, pilot, and roll out.
  • Provide system level storage management including provisioning volume groups, logical volumes, and physical disk management.
  • Utilize best practices when configuring host storage to ensure efficient operation of host applications.
  • Maintain periodic system backup and recovery environments including schedules, software, and hardware subsystems such as virtual tape libraries. Perform file and image level recoveries as needed.
  • Recover lost server functionality causing business interruption within agreed upon organizational service level objectives.
  • Develop and maintain adequate documentation of the server environment to ensure successful ongoing support.
  • Regularly review system resource utilization and troubleshoot any observed performance issues.
  • Ensure systems are being pro-actively monitored and that system alerts are being generated on critical events.
  • Provide back out plans for any scheduled upgrades or maintenance.
  • Maintain disaster recovery documentation and participate in disaster recovery planning and periodic exercises.

Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, the associate must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required:

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Computer Science/Business or application training, plus four (4) years' experience with System Application Software; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Skills, Abilities, and/or Training

The following qualities are required:

  • Knowledge of systems analysis techniques and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of applying application solutions (software/hardware) to accommodate business needs.
  • Supervision or training experience recommended.
  • Experience in evaluating business risk associated with systems activities.
  • Experience in systems planning and analysis
  • Experience in mainframe and/or client server application development. (Preferred)
  • Experience in application package selection and implementation. (Preferred)
  • Work requires good understanding of the theoretical and applied basis for at least one technology.
  • Has developed experience in solution creation with increased business acumen.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Active Directory configuration and management.
  • Experience with configuration and management of DNS, DHCP, and RADIUS environments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Windows operating system environments as well as best practices to implement new systems.
  • Familiarity with VMWare/ESX server configuration and management.
  • Familiarity with CITRIX/XenApp system management including how to create and manage published applications.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft System Center and Microsoft Exchange environments.
  • Familiarity with MAC OS.
  • Knowledge of SAN and NAS environments such as NETAPP and EMC.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Linux Operating System environments as well as best practices to implement new systems.
  • Familiarity with AIX features such as NIM (including package management and deployment) and VIO configuration and management (including partition mobility). 
  • Familiarity with shell scripting for system task automation.
  • Familiarity with virtual and physical tape libraries.
  • Experience with implementing and maintaining backup and recovery management software environments such as Tivoli Storage Manager.
  • Understanding of backup and recovery scheduling best practices.
  • Knowledge of Disaster Recovery approaches and methodologies.

  • Accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work within strict time frames and resolute deadlines.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft® Office Suite (Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Outlook, and Windows 7).
