Job Description:

  • Participates in the Ammonia Response Team (ART) and Emergency Response Team (ERT).
  • Mobilizes [and/or communicates the mobilization of] the ART during ammonia release events.
  • Attends the Process Safety Management (PSM) monthly meetings and provides input on shortcomings, repairs and real-time issues.
  • Provides key input in all Mechanical Integrity (MI) assessments and Process Hazzard Analysis (PHA) reviews.
  • Closes all MI and PHA corrective actions.
  • Performs routine calibration on safety equipment and devices, especially those dealing with sensing liquid ammonia releases to atmosphere.
  • Performs ammonia refrigeration compressor maintenance (from lubrication to overhaul).
  • Conducts water testing and chemical analysis for boilers and refrigeration evaporative cooling towers.  Coordinates with vendors to adjust for excesses and deficiencies in findings.  Implements planned course of corrective action.
  • Investigates and corrects temperature alarms for a wide range of process/storage areas.
  • Utilizes good judgement at all times, especially high-stress/emergency situations.
  • Maintains industrial boiler systems [including downtrace equipment] and monitors function.
  • Exercises and monitors a variety of back-up electrical generators during power failure events.
  • Demonstrates a systematic, logical, methodical approach to troubleshooting multifaceted problems.
  • Utilizes the appropriate, specified Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for a wide range of critical tasks.
  • Maintains exceptional computer literacy to operate complex Human Interface Modules (HIM) managing multi-compressor refrigeration systems.
  • Knowledgeable of SDS in freon-type and ammonia refrigeration systems.  Respects [does not fear] each refrigerant type.
  • Understands and demonstrates knowledge of refrigeration cycle.
  • Troubleshoots compressor maintenance and efficiency problems. 
  • Cleans and maintains evaporator coils, chiller units, heat exchangers and other heat-transfer equipment. 
  • Interprets and maintains Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) to comply with OSHA requirements and assist in troubleshooting and/or emergency response.  Updates drawings as necessary with CAD software.
  • Assists the Manager, Corporate Maintenance maintain the internal PSM program.
  • Identifies Management of Change (MOC) requirements, corrects MOC shortcomings and relabels system in accordance with law.
  • Utilizes system design, service techniques and understanding of refrigerant phase/pressure to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair HVAC equipment.
  • Handles waste oils containing refrigerant according to SOP.
  • Understands shutdown/start-up process of an industrial refrigeration compressor.
  • Prepares units for periodic maintenance and tie-ins by certified contractor.  Understands the risks of trapped refrigerant.
  • Conducts documented line breaks to refrigerant lines.
  • Troubleshoots electrical and automation equipment ranging from 0mA to 600VAC, 3ph. 
  • Understands control and line circuitry and eliminates circuits in troubleshooting to advance the efficiency of repair.
  • Deduces problems with HIM and Process Logic Controllers (PLC) through sound electrical troubleshooting techniques and testing.
  • Maintains documentation daily for inspection from EPA/OSHA and other government agencies.
  • Completes and passes annual refresher training successfully.
  • Maintains/reviews/updates system SOPs as required by policy, directives and law.
  • Maintains a variety of production equipment when placed in a support role to Manufacturing Operations.
