Overview

The primary purpose of this position is responsible for performing the essential duties of the Dairy Operations Laboratory Programs to ensure a safe and legally-acceptable product is produced.  They must perform bacterial plating and chemical analyses on finished product to ensure products meet predetermined parameters as described in the Dairy Operations Laboratory Manual.  They operate and maintain laboratory equipment as well as collect samples, generate data/results, maintain laboratory records, and interpret laboratory results.

The individual must be capable of analyzing data and making rapid, accurate decisions throughout the course of the production day.  This individual acts as a liaison between Milk and ICP plants, the laboratory staff, and Corporate Quality Control. The incumbent is also required to perform all tasks in a safe manner consistent with corporate policies and state and federal laws.

  1. Perform bacterial plating.This would require using Petrifilm, Coli sure, and Colilert packets for testing.They must read bacterial plates within the appropriate time frame, and take action in the event of microbial contamination.

  2. Must collect samples for testing from filling machines, pasteurized tanks, raw tanks, and/or the storage cooler.Must also collect samples for monthly and yearly analyses to comply with Federal, State, and Local mandates.

  3. Develop strong working knowledge of all laboratory instrumentation.This includes, but is not limited to:use of EQA Analyzer, Charm NovaLUM unit, Charm ROSA READER system, pH meters, the CEM Fat Analyzer and the FT-1 Fat Analyzer.

  4. Develop strong working knowledge of QA Studio software that is used for data entry, sample identification, and reporting of laboratory results.

  5. Develop working knowledge of BICEPS to generate Purchase Orders.

  6. Develop strong understanding of all paperwork and documentation as it pertains to each facility.

  7. Required to become Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) approved Milk Sampler.

  8. Required to become Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) certified Appendix N (certified for testing in antibiotics and raw milk testing) Industry Supervisor and participate in annual split sample testing.

  9. Must be able to trouble-shoot out-of-spec results as well as correct non-compliant finished product prior to packaging.

  10. Must keep work area clean and orderly.

  11. Must stock laboratory with essential supplies and prepare necessary stock solutions as needed.

  12. Must calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment at required intervals.

  13. Must participate in Saturday Walk-through:read plates, complete and Inspection form, etc.Assigned on a rotating basis.

  14. Must complete other miscellaneous testing as needed:Allergen testing, thermometer checks, etc.

  15. Must participate in daily taste-testing evaluations.

  16. Responsible for collecting COAs, Letters of Guarantee, conducting Mock Recalls, addressing customer complaints, etc. in order to meet plant needs.

  17. Oversees product permitting, Tampico Quality Assurance program, assists in monitoring Pest Control Program, label verification, and environmental pathogen program documentation.

  18. All associates in their related tasks are responsible for maintaining the commitment to Food Safety and Food Quality.

  19. Understand/manage HACCP and SQF duties as they relate to the daily operations in both Milk and Ice Cream facilities.Work with QA Manager on developing/implementing/maintaining food safety and quality related programs.

  20. Hours are Monday-Friday.

  21. Starting Rate of Pay is 14.00.

Job Qualifications

An Associate’s Degree from a 2-year institution or technical school and/or experience in the field of Dairy Technology.  A Bachelor’s degree is preferred.  Previous lab experience is preferred.
